My Introduction

My name is David Grassi, the creator of this site and the project, as you might have noticed, Black Sky. I am 25 years old, have never made a computer game, and never really been a part of making one. For me, this is a crash coarse in C++, OpenGL, Windows API, and the crazy math that seems to be in every single line of code. For now that is all you need to know, but let's get down to the more important stuff.

Black Sky?

Black Sky is (atm) the name of my project, or to be more precise, my game. I suppose a little bit of history will do best here. A long time ago, about the age of 10, I had what some kids had, a Sega Genesis. Of course, I wasn't able to afford the price of video games at that age, so the only way I played games was to rent them. This worked perfect for me as I got the chance to play almost all the video games at the local video store. Sure I had my favorites that I rented more than once, and beat, more than once. But one game really stood out. A game probably no one reading this site has ever heard about, and never will until now. Star Flight. Now I don't even know how to start. I suppose to get to the point: is one of those video games that changed my life, to a degree.

Star Flight was one of the coolest console games I've ever played. At that age and at that time, playing that game really seemed like I was in a whole other world flying around in space. I was hooked. Ever since then I always keep my eye out for anything, a sound, a screen shot, a game title, that might have even the slightest thing to do with science fiction and space. But as the years went on, these games were far and few between. Sure there was Tie Fighter, which was excellent, and Privateer and so on. But nothing was like the first time I played Star Flight. But then I came across Star Control 2, and everything changed. But again, Star Flight was the original and the first for me. Over the years I've played a lot of games that tried to re-kindle the magic and spirit of the original. I never had the chance to play Elite, which is the most famous of these games. But these players know what I mean. There is never anything like the first. No one seems to be able to top them off, make them better, or improve on anything major. And as games get graphically more advanced and generate more eye candy, they seem to loose more and more originality each year. Is it really that games of the first era were really that great? Or that the people that played them over the years have over-played everything to the point it seems redundant. Or is it true that games these days are made for one purpose. to make people rich.

That's where Black Sky comes in. The primary idea is to make a computer game that will make players believe they really are taking place in a massive galaxy of life. To combine all the best features of the best games that never made it just perfect. Of course, I have to point out the obvious before I can begin any type of glorification. The game is 2d, not 3d.

Now I can only imagine, as I did my self, sort of go "2d? WHAT THE @#)(%@!" I mean really, who the hell makes 2d games anymore, they are out. Well that seems to be the general consensus even though everyone knows it's not true. But the reason why I am making it 2d is because of the overhead. A 2d game is MUCH easier to make than a 3d game in terms of labor. Plus, this being a crash course, doing a 3d game would have made it just that much more difficult. The other reason being is anyone that can respect a great game, isn't going to bash it because it's simply 2d. A great game is a great game, but graphics definitely help big time. Which is why I'm doing what I can to make sure it's the best looking 2d space game that can be made. The longer I wait to make this game however, the worse chance of my game being able to achieve greatness, weather or not it will. If I ever add on to the series, perhaps the next one will be 3d, once I learn enough.

But the general premises of the game, is Star Flight, meets Star Control 2 &3, meets Freelancer, meets, EV Nova and Starscape. Anyways that's the long shot. So hopefully I have good aim. So if you want a game like this as much as I do, cheer me on, and wish me luck, because I'm, going to need it.
